Background of the study
Translation practices play an essential role in the preservation and dissemination of oral literature, particularly for languages with rich cultural histories such as Yoruba. In Ibadan, translation has become a pivotal tool in safeguarding Yoruba oral traditions by converting them into written and digital formats, thereby ensuring their longevity. The process of translation not only captures the linguistic nuances of Yoruba oral literature but also facilitates the transfer of cultural knowledge to wider audiences (Adejumo, 2023). As oral narratives are rendered into text, they become accessible for academic study, media production, and intergenerational transmission, thus reinforcing cultural identity and heritage (Olabisi, 2024). However, translation efforts are often challenged by issues of fidelity and contextual accuracy. The risk of losing meaning, subtle idioms, and cultural nuances during translation is significant, particularly when modern digital methods are employed (Babatunde, 2023). This study explores how translation practices impact the preservation of Yoruba oral literature in Ibadan by examining the methodologies used, the challenges encountered, and the effectiveness of these practices in maintaining the original literary and cultural essence. By analyzing translated texts, interviewing practitioners, and reviewing policy frameworks, the research aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the role translation plays in cultural preservation (Adejumo, 2023; Olabisi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the critical role of translation in preserving Yoruba oral literature in Ibadan, several challenges impede its effectiveness. Issues such as loss of cultural nuances, varying translation quality, and the tension between literal and interpretative approaches have resulted in discrepancies that may compromise the authenticity of the original texts (Babatunde, 2023). Additionally, the rapid evolution of digital translation practices introduces further complexity in maintaining consistency and fidelity to traditional narratives (Olabisi, 2024). This study seeks to identify these challenges and evaluate the impact of current translation practices on the preservation of Yoruba oral literature. The goal is to propose strategies that can enhance translation quality and ensure that the cultural richness of Yoruba oral traditions is maintained (Adejumo, 2023).
